Abstract
The mechanism of mixing elastomers with carbon black involves elongational as well as shear deformation. Therefore, elongational measurements on raw elastomers and compounds are important in understanding the processing behavior. In this paper, the definition of elongational flow is discussed, its application to the mixing equipment is examined, and some results from elongational measurements with raw elastomers and a carbon-black-containing compound are presented.
