Abstract
In long lightwave systems with optical amplifiers, fibre nonlinearities cause four-wave mixing so that the signal interacts with the amplified spontaneous emission noise. It is argued that in a system working at overall zero-dispersion the new spectral components act as signal so that the effective amount of noise is no different than in a linear system. Keywords
