Abstract
Kvaleya epilaeve, a new genus and species of Melobesioideae parasitic on Leptophytum laeve, resembles the host genus in a number of characteristics. The thallus of the parasite is composed primarily of conceptacles with small vegetative lobes. The anatomy and reproduction are similar to Leptophytum, but the plants are colourless, and they develop haustoria that penetrate the host's perithallium. Data on the depth and geographic distribution of K. epilaeve relative to its host leads us to hypothesize that the parasite becomes increasingly abundant in arctic waters due to the metabolic efficiency of the host at temperatures below 3–5 C.Keywords
