HEPATIC CALCIFICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH UMBILICAL VEIN CATHETERIZATION IN THE NEWBORN INFANT

Abstract
Two cases are reported in which roentgenographically visible hepatic calcifications developed following umbilical vein catheterization and infusion of hypertonic solutions and of fluids with a pH much different from that of blood. The neonatal history should be taken into consideration when confronted with hepatic calcifications in an infant. If the umbilical vein is to be used for fluid infusion, the catheter tip must be in the inferior vena cava to avoid liver damage.
