Family Supports for the Aged: A Comparison of U.S. and Japan Responses

Abstract
This report is part of a larger study on the role of economic and social supports to families in order to make it possible for them to provide creative living arrangements for elderly relatives and themselves. American and Japanese samples are compared on their willingness to provide care for their elderly relatives. Responses indicate there are few differences in willingness between samples. Willingness is equally high, over 80% in both societies. The importance of these findings are dicussed regarding cross cultural perspectives on aging and emerging policy issues for both the U. S. and Japan.
