SPIRILLUM VIRGINIANUM NOV. SPEC

Abstract
The microorganisms were obtained from mud adhering to the outside of the oyster. At first they grew (in mixed cultures) only on egg cube medium. Later they became accustomed to nutrient agar and were isolated in pure cultures by plating. Their physiology and cytology were studied and are discussed in detail. The flagellum and internal structure are easily studied with dark field. The chromatin spirals are demonstrated by intra vitam staining. They move in either direction and appear to be pushed forward by the lashing "posterior" flagellum. Many granular forms and coccoid bodies are found in old cultures. The process of transverse division is followed and described in detail. This spirillum is an excellent specimen for instruction in class work for type study of the group.
