ANELASTIC RELAXATION OF OXYGEN IN PURE NIOBIUM AND VANADIUM

Abstract
Internal friction experiments on Nb-0 and V-0 alloys (0.1 to 0.85 at %) using the same samples for oscillations at about 1 Hz and 1 kHz were performed to accurately determine the Snoek relaxation parameters. With increasing 0 content, the Snoek peaks for Nb-0 and V-0 for both frequencies are shifted to higher temperatures accompanied by a continuous and almost symmetric broadening. This broadening is accounted for by a continuous distribution in relaxation times and in the case of Nb-0 it is shown to originate from a distribution in activation energies. A detailed analysis of the Nb-0 data demontrates that the predictions of the clustering model for the interstitial interaction deviates strongly from the observations
