Abstract
The widening of the spectrum brought about by a spectrometer can be compensated for by numerical restoration. The authors calculate the accuracy of linear restoration methods and show that it is poor unless the restored spectrum is confined in advanced by some conditions, for example is specified to be a very regular function. The accuracy is particularly poor when the resolution kernel is gaussian, which is the case in neutron scattering. Therefore, they put forward the application of a non-linear restoration method based on quadratic programming and obtain a much more accurate restored spectrum by just assuming that it shall be positive. Keywords
