Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the noise attenuation properties of discrete morphological filters. Using the connections between morphological filters and stack filters certain symmetry properties of morphological filters are studied and for 1D morphological filters analytical expressions for the output distributions are derived. Utilizing these results it is shown that as estimators morphological filters are biased but that they have very good noise attenuation properties.© (1991) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
