Abstract
Involving patients in goal-setting through “contracting” has been established as an effective way to achieve positive health care outcomes. Facilitating such active involvement of patients in their care is now an important part of the nurse's role. Thus it is increasingly important for nurse educators to understand the dynamics of patient contracting and the best methods for teaching it to students and staff nurses. This article tells what a patient contract is; why it is helpful; who can use it; how to teach its use; and how to evaluate it. Characteristics of a good patient contract and concrete ways to achieve them are presented. Keywords
