Abstract
In this review, development of the experimental techniques of ultrasonic spectroscopy made in the past 60 years is briefly recollected. Most of the thechniques belong to one of the four groups evolving from the interferometer, the reverberation method, the pulse method or the Brillouin scattering. The original experiment and the latest technique of each group are introduced. Also dealt with are some fundamental problems inherent in the observation of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation. Brief discussion and comments are given on the problems of uncertainty, spatial wave vs temporal wave, velocity of thermal phonon, and group velocity vs phase velocity. Keywords
