Abstract
Investigations into the mandibular joint by dissection, microradiography and arthrography are described. These, together with observations on jaw injuries, led to the origination of the principle of condylotomy. The operation; is indicated in those cases of internal derangement of the mandibular joint which do not respond to the conservative measures of bite adjustment and whose X-ray examination reveals no disorder of the bone structure. The method of routine examination which has evolved in the light of the experience of 2,000 mandibular joint examinations is described. Various conditions of the joint are illustrated.
