Developing action research in nursing

Abstract
Action research is becoming increasingly popular among nurse researchers. It is seen to offer a means of narrowing the gap between theory and practice, of promoting the development of the nurse as ‘practitioner researcher', and of empowering nurses and users to bring about change in their lives and work (1-4). In this article, we shall refer to the influence of the 1940s work of Kurt Lewin in developing ideas about action research (5), and then look at the growing use of such an approach in nursing.
