Distance Between Observations as an Index of Average Home Range Size

Abstract
Successive distances (SD) between locations of an individual have been used in indices of home range but do not make full use of available data. Locational data may be used more efficiently by an estimate of home range based on all distances (AD) between locations. Combined SD or AD data for individuals provide large sample sizes, over relatively brief periods of time, with which to calculate an index of home range size for a group of animals. Computer simulations comparing SD and AD home range indices revealed that AD provided larger sample sizes and consistently smaller standard errors. Increasing the eccentricity or the number of spatial dimensions of simulated home ranges increased the index of home range.
