Abstract
In the experiment reported here, two groups of monkeys were given the same series of object-discrimination problems. The reward amount, 1, 2, 4, or 8 food pellets, was varied from problem to problem for the Ss in one group. Identical amounts were used for the other group. However, the group was divided into four subgroups with the reward amount different for each subgroup. In accordance with the hypothesis outlined above, it was predicted that the positive slope of the function relating reward amount and discrimination performance would be greater for the former group, the group on which the shift method was used.
