BOARDMAN, OREGON-- New, high-intensity tree plantations are setting the stage for rapid biotechnological change in forestry, the ultimate goal being to redesign trees altogether, creating superproductive organisms that in many ways will not resemble today's trees at all. But the novel methods may never be used if the ecological risks and economic obstacles cannot be overcome.
