Vestibular Involvement and Testing in Acoustic Neuromas

Abstract
Eighty-three per cent of the cases in this series at some time during their history had prodromal symptoms related to the vestibular system. In 33 cases the symptoms were a sensation of unsteadiness, especially with turning the head suddenly or with turning in bed from one position to another or with bending over or getting up suddenly. This unsteadiness seemed to persist over a long period of time and, even though it fluctuated somewhat, was more or less constantly present once it started. However, in some of these patients, the symptoms would appear for a time and then disappear, only to reappear again. In six cases, these symptoms were preceded by actual attacks of whirling vertigo. Rarely was this particular history of vertiginous attacks a significant aspect of the patient's symptoms.
