Abstract
The article is a review crammed with facts. The importance of protecting the gastric mucous membrane from damage is discussed, and the secretion of pepsin and mucin and the restoration during rest of the gland cells. In discussing factors that affect gastric secretion and motility the author mentions conditional reflexes, reflexes from the mouth and chemical stimuli from the pyloric portion of the stomach, the duodenum, the small intestine and the colon; he discusses the mechanical and chemical factors affecting the motility of the stomach, also the influence of different types of food, and the ways in which variations in the preparation of food affect digestion. The secretory and motor work of the stomach may be increased or diminished at will by modifying the consistency of the food or the size of the particles. In dogs yeast appears to be a strong activator of gastric secretion. Babkin believes that further study will extend our control of the alimentary tract. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
