Reappraisal of Minoan kilns by thermoluminescence and neutron activation / XRF analyses

Abstract
This paper will extend and further elaborate on the chronological results by thermoluminescence (TL) for Minoan kilns that were originally reported in the joint article by Liritzis and Thomas (Î980), and will also develop the theme through the application of neutron-activation (NAA) and X- ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses. The objective was to analyse the occurrences of green-fused matter in the kilns in order to determine whether these kilns had metallurgical or simply pottery-producing functions. It is concluded that dating many samples by TL from the same kiln may reduce the final overall error in the age. The analytical techniques for the materials analyzed confirm the pottery- producing function of each Minoan kiln examined.Cette étude étend et améliore les résultats chronologiques obtenus par la thermoluminescence (TL) sur les fours Minoéens et présentés initialement en 1980 par Liritzis et Thomas. Elle développe aussi le sujet grâce à l'application de l'analyse par activation neutronique (NAA) et de l'analyse par la fluorescence X. L'objectif est d'étudier les occurrences de matière fondue, verte, dans les fours en vue de déterminer si ces fours avaient des fonctions métallurgiques ou simplement de production de poteries. En conclusion, la datation de nombreux échantillons par TL pour le même four peut réduire l'incertitude finale sur l'âge. Les techniques d'analyse appliquées aux matériaux examinés confirment la fonction de production de poterie de chaque four Minoén étudié.Liritzis Yannis.
