Organized Convection in the Ocean Surface Layer Resulting from Slicks and Wave Radiation Stress

Abstract
Experiments are described which show that the attenuation of waves by surface films and the resulting radiation stress breaks up film patches into streaks and produces secondary flows. In the sea surface layers, this can result in the formation of longitudinal rolls with axes approximately parallel to the wind. The transverse circulation in the rolls involves both potential and rotational motion.Keywords
