Political consequences of German unification

Abstract
The ‘big bang’ approach to German unification poses several problems for the Federal Republic affecting the governance structure and the nature of public policy. Four questions require particular attention: How will the basic fabric of the German state be affected? Can the political institutions cope with the drastic economic effects of unification? How far will the costs necessitate basic changes in economic and social policy? Will unification bring about a fundamental shift in Germany's foreign policy role? A general conclusion is that the effects of the upheavals are less likely to make the Federal Republic a ‘strong German state’ and more likely to result in it becoming just like other industrial democracies.
