Intraoperative carotid evaluation.

Abstract
A TECHNICALLY precise repair is the most important determinant of success of carotid endarterectomy. Several studies have demonstrated a significant correlation between technical errors in the carotid repair and the development of perioperative neurologic deficits.1-4 Intraoperative evaluation is the best way to determine the hemodynamic status of the repair because immediate operative revision is possible if a technical defect is identified. Intraoperative angiography is an accurate method of evaluation, but is time-consuming, poses the risk of causing air emboli, and exposes operating room personnel to irradiation.4,5
