Primary biliary cirrhosis associated with coeliac disease

Abstract
Objective To present an additional case of primary biliary cirrhosis complicating coeliac disease. Patient A 63-year-old woman presenting with laboratory signs of cholestasis, but no clinical symptoms. Results Liver biopsy showed primary biliary cirrhosis stage I. The patient was HLA B9-positive. Antibodies were found against mitochondria (M2, M4 and M8), DNA, thryoglobulin, parietal cell antigen and gliadin. Conclusion The association between coeliac disease and primary biliary cirrhosis represents more than a chance combination and appears to be part of a complex autoimmune syndrome with all the classic features of these diseases, such as HLA association and autoimmune antibodies.
