Abstract
Arwel Edwards J. (1976) Industrial structure and regional change: a shift-share analysis of the British Columbia economy 1961–1970. Reg. Studies 10, 307–317. Since 1960 the technique of shift-share has been used increasingly widely in regional economic analysis and planning. In this study, it is applied at three spatial levels—of Canada by means of an inter-provincial comparison, of the individual province of British Columbia, and of the ten census regions within that province. Data is analysed both on a ten-year and, where available, on an annual time interval in an attempt to overcome a technical limitation of time-distortion. Comparative performances at provincial and census region levels provide a basis for regional performance classifications designed to assist policy planning procedures.
