Abstract
The population of the jack-pine budworm (Choristoneura pinus) on the distal cluster of new shoots on prominent branches was statistically correlated (Y = mX + a; r was highly significant) with the population on the next 10 lateral clusters (ratio of approximately 1:3). The number of shoots in the distal and lateral clusters were related to the numbers on the next 10 clusters and the number of larvae per cluster was related to the number of shoots per cluster. When the male cone and new needle-feeding habits of the budworm are considered, the above relationships clearly indicate that the distal shoot cluster of prominent branches would be a sound sampling unit for the jack-pine budworm. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
