Abstract
South Australia has a population of about 1.5 million, of whom one million live in Adelaide, the state capital. All except one of the state's 160 practising psychiatrists live in Adelaide or adjacent rural and semi-rural locations. Historically, professional and geographical isolation and lack of facilities have prevented psychiatrists from living and working outside the metropolitan environment. Keywords
