Abstract
The effects of intracortical microstimulation and input-output relationships were examined using pyramidectomized cats. The threshold currents for producing muscle contractions were much higher than those in the intact animals. The effects appeared predominantly in the proximal muscles even from areas where in the normal animal contraction of distal muscles is elicited. The input-output relationship in the pyramidectomized animals differed from that of the intact animals. The cortical area, which on stimulation produced contraction of a particular muscle or muscles, received peripheral inputs that were not related to the contraction of the muscle or muscles. The possible functional significance of the extrapyramidal system is discussed in relation to the pyramidal motor system. This publication has 14 references indexed in Scilit:
