Abstract
The differentiation of plastids under the conditions of disturbed respiration has been studied by means of the electron microscope in primary leaves of etiolated bean seedlings. It has been found that the transformation of the regularly arranged tubuli in prolamellar bodies into clusters of vesicles under the action of light could not be influenced by respiratory disturbances at all. However anoxic conditions prevent the development of grana in plastids. If the treatment was not too long the damage could be repaired when the plants were returned to the air. A similar delay in the development of grana has been observed also in leaves treated with inhibitors of respiratory enzymes (NaN3, KCN, 2,4-DNP, NaF). The effect of these chemicals was however not thoroughly uniformly distributed on the whole lamina of the leaf. An unequal penetration, owing to the diversity in anatomic structure, is considered to be the cause of this phenomenon. Keywords
