Laparoscopy in the Management of Intersex Anomalies

Abstract
Intersex anomalies are rare conditions, usually heralded by ambiguous external genitalia. After exclusion of the life-threatening adrenal enzymatic disorders, gender assignment is one of the primary concerns in the management of these newborn infants. Although the diagnosis may be apparent in the majority after the initial physical examination, karyotyping, and radiologic and biochemical evaluation, in a sizeable group, it still may not be obvious. Laparoscopy plays an important role in the management of this latter group, providing the pediatric urologist with the means to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures simultaneously through a minimally invasive approach.
