Abstract
Methylene blue added to embryos of the grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, produces an increase in oxygen uptake. Urethane, within reversible limits, does not inhibit the action of methylene blue. The sequence of additions of methylene blue and urethane quantitatively affects the oxygen uptake of the embryos. Addition of methylene blue has no effect on the normal R. Q. (0.75). Urethane raises the R. Q. from 0.75 to 0.94. Possible modes of action of methylene blue and urethane upon the respiratory mechanism are indicated. Keywords
