Abstract
Of 70 patients with giardiasis, 58 (83%) had been traveling outside of the United States when symptoms began. Characteristic complaints consisted of nausea, weight loss, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea with nonbloody stools. No abnormalities in blood counts or in results of liver function tests or large-bowel studies were found. Two of three patients who underwent barium sulfate examinations of the small bowel showed abnormalities, and one who underwent a peroral small-bowel biopsy showed marked inflammation.Giardia lambliacan be pathogenic in man, and treatment with quinacrine hydrochloride is very effective. Keywords
