Abstract
“After 25 years of extraordinary progress, the computer industry is ready to enter its infancy.” So wrote John Pierce of Cal Tech (and formerly of Bell Labs), and his comment emphasizes the challenge of the prospect we face in computer science. Rather than complacently reviewing the progress already made, we must look ahead toward the developments we can expect in the future. In this short article I can do no more than touch on a few of the highlights; what follows does not claim to be a complete review, but it may serve to demonstrate that the infant is healthy and can look forward to many years of growth and development.
