Abstract
A model of the orientational kink defect in quasi‐one‐dimensional crystals of ice is proposed which takes the relaxation of the basic sublattice of the ice crystal into account. Some physical properties of the kink‐defect are evaluated within the continuum approach and compared with the experimental data. An original interpretation of the orientational defect is presented and discussed in view of elucidating the nature of the H‐bonding in ice and water. In particular, it is argued that a central H‐bond of the kink defect can be interpreted as a monomeric OH‐group. Keywords
