THE USE OF RADIOIODINE IN THE TREATMENT OF EXOPHTHALMIC GOITER*

Abstract
In 27 of 40 patients with exophthalmic goiter a single therapeutic dose of I131 (ranging from 2600-20,000 microcuries) was followed by a fall in BMR to 15% or less, and the disappearance of clinical evidences of hyperthyroidism and, in 8 patients, a significant improvement in clinical condition. Complete control of the hyperthyroidism followed a 2d therapeutic dose in 4,and in 5 following a 3d dose. In 5 patients poor results were obtained. The time required for reduction of the BMR to normal limits ranged from 6 to 12 weeks after the start of treatment in the group showing the best results. The period of observation following improvement is still too short to predict the long-range efficacy of this method of treatment of exophthalmic goiter.
