Abstract
The sera of patients with histologically proven carcinomata of the gastrointestinal tract were fractionated by gel filtration and the fractions assayed for the presence of free carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) binding immunoglobulins [Ig] and CEA immune complexes by radioimmune, double-diffusion, using 125I-CEA as a marker. In 11 of 13 cases with disease recurrence, the presence of CEA-Ig[immunoglobulin]M complexes was observed, and in 3 of 13 cases the presence of CEA-IgG complexes could be demonstrated. Free CEA-binding Ig could not be detected.
