Insulin in Plasma and Lymph and Tissue Glucose Uptake in the Exercising Hind Limb of the Dog

Abstract
Blood flow, plasma and interstitial insulin levels and tissue glucose uptake were measured in the exercising hind limb of the dog. Blood flow and glucose utilization were markedly enhanced. Plasma non-suppressible insulin-like activity (NSILA) and immuno-reactive insulin (IRI), as well as lymph protein and IRI levels did not change; only lymph NSILA displayed a manifold increase. It is suggested that "de novo" production of NSILA in the working area might be responsible for both the rise of lymph NSILA and the increased tissular glucose utilization. 1 This study was supported by Public Health Service Research Grant TWOO-289-03 from the National Institute of Health and by the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique Médicale,Crédit 925
