Photocoagulation of Exudative Senile Maculopathy

Abstract
In recent years it has become recognized that in many exudative or hemorrhagic afflictions of the posterior fundus, focal areas of circulatory breakdown can be identified. It has also become established that photocoagulation directed to these foci can arrest the disease process. This paper discusses the use of photocoagulation for treatment of serous and/or hemorrhagic detachment of the macular retina in individuals 50 years of age and older. Analysis of the results of photocoagulation of 62 eyes in 54 patients with this disease shows generally gratifying results. Thirty-seven eyes (60%) had improved vision, 11 (18%) had no change in vision, and 14 (22%) had a decrease in vision.
