Abstract
A procedure based on elastic analysis is presented to find an economical proportioning of a continuous built up I-beam or girder which is symmetrical in cross section, has an unchanged web of constant height, and is subjected to a uniformly distributed load. The method determines the optimum locations of the assumed number of flange plate cutoff points required for an economical design. A design example is given to illustrate the procedure. Keywords
