Abstract
P. chrysogenum (Q-176) was grown in corn steep liquor -lactose medium and the amino acid uptake followed by means of 2 dimensional paper chromatography. Eleven amino acids identified 1st in the corn steep liquor were all taken up by the organism during growth, and could be found, before the main period of penicillin formation, in the mycelium. In addition, glutamine was also identified in the mycelium. Following growth there were in the medium traces of a few of the amino acids, glutamine, and in addition an unknown amino acid. When growth was on a chemically defined medium, in which the corn steep liquor was replaced by inorganic N, the results were similar, except that none of the unknown amino acid was found in the culture filtrates. Keywords
