Abstract
There is certainly one good thing about Decision Support Systems: the discussions about them force us to reexamine the philosophy and outlook of our field. We have labels like Operations Research, Management Science, Management Information Systems, Decision Analysis, Simulation, Corporate Planning Models or just Planning Models, Scenario Writing, Subjective Expected Utility Theory, and even Management Support Systems. The differences between these fields have been stressed, but is there a commonality encompassing the approach, or at least part of the approach, to all these efforts? And if there is such a paradigm, is it useful to discuss it? I think so, but to reach such a common basis we need to go beyond our field to a higher level of abstraction.
