Outbreak of Botulism in Tennessee Due to Type B Cl. botulinum

Abstract
Two cases of botulism with one death resulting from eating home-canned beans and okra are reported. Type B Clostridium botulinum toxin was isolated from specimens of both vegetables. This is the first recorded instance of the demonstration in Tennessee of C. botulinum toxin in home-canned vegetables and is the first report of C. botulinum, Type B, as a cause of botulism in that State. 20 cases of botulism in Tennessee which occurred prior to 1939, including an outbreak of 7 cases in Memphis in 1920 resulting from eating commercially canned ripe olives, are reviewed.
