Abstract
The possible consequences of inhalation of enzyme dusts include allergic illness, such as asthma, and effects specific to the enzyme, such as emphysema from proteases. The outcome in a given case will vary on account of factors relating not only to the dust, but also to the individual who inhales it. In respect of allergy, it will depend on whether or not the individual has already become sensitized to the material, and the likelihood of this will depend on his atopic status. With proteases, the possible outcome may vary not only with the nature of the protease, but also with the level of the recipient's natural protease inhibitors, some of which may themselves be inactivated by certain enzymes. Cigarette smoking has both direct and indirect influences, and the outcome may also be affected by the presence of pre-existing disease.
