Abstract
Sexual trauma is an area that for too long has been denied and minimized. The victimization/12-step recovery movement has had an extraordinary impact and has performed a valuable service in confronting denial and raising consciousness of the reality of widespread sexual trauma, especially child sexual abuse, incest, and rape. Accepting the reality of the sexual abuse is crucial to being a survivor. However, the pendulum swings too far when the abuse becomes the victim's primary self-definition. This paper presents a cognitive–behavioral approach, with a detailed case study, to the integration of sexual trauma in order to help the person and couple lead a psychologically, sexually, and relationally successful life as survivors.
