NEONATAL WEIGHT LOSS IN INFANTS OF DIABETIC MOTHERS

Abstract
A study of a total of 400 infants confirmed that infants born of diabetic mothers show a greater neonatal weight loss that infants of normal mothers (7.6% as compared with 3.2%). This was found to be true, both as compared with infants of the same gestational age as well as with infants of the same birth weight as the infants of diabetic mothers, with a less marked weight loss in infants whose mothers had received long-term pre-natal care. The lack of fluid administration during the first 24 hr. plays a role, but cannot fully explain the increased weight loss; the remaining part of which has not yet been elucidated.
