Abstract
Chick embryos were injected with tritiated thymidine into the parenchyma of the bursa of Fabricius on the 18th day of incubation. Control animals were injected subcutaneously. Autoradiographic examination of sections from different organs showed a transport of labelled cells from the bursa of Fabricius to the thymus and the spleen 24 as well as 48 h after labelling. These migrants were all large pyronine-positive lymphoid cells. The localization of the bursa-derived cells in the thymus was determined. Twenty-four hours after labelling, the majority of these cells was found in the thymic medulla, while 48 h after labelling, the distribution had changed and a large portion was found in the cortico-medullary junction and in the cortex. This is most probably due to a selective loss of such cells from the thymic medulla between 24 and 48 h, either by division or by emigration to other organs. No cell migration could be demonstrated from the bursa of Fabricius to the intestine in general, to the region of the caecal tonsils, or to the bone marrow. Keywords
