PENICILLIN IN TETANUS

Abstract
The clinical picture of generalized tetanus has been known for thousands of years; its causative agent was discovered over sixty years ago; almost perfect methods of prophylaxis are known and being practiced, and yet the disease remains as one of the most dangerous infectious complications of wounds, because of the inadequate methods of treatment. The studies of Abel and his co-workers1and Firor and his co-workers2have demonstrated that the value of tetanus antitoxin is limited once the symptoms of the disease are well established, and when an overwhelming amount of toxin is fixed by the cells of the central nervous system the invariable outcome is death. Even if the outcome of generalized tetanus is always grave, there are patients that respond favorably to the limited but well known therapeutic measures.
