Abstract
Antibodies [Ab], reacting with homogenates of salivary glands were produced in rabbits exposed to G. morsitans morsitans. Precipitating Ab and high titers of hemagglutinating Ab occurred in all exposed rabbits. Precipitating Ab, identified using immunoelectrophoresis, immunodiffusion and precipitin ring tests, developed within 11 days of exposure. As many as 7 antigen-Ab precipitin arcs were identified using immunoelectrophoresis. All precipitating antigens in the salivary glands had MW greater than 25,000 (determined by Sephadex gel filtration); the salivary gland anti-coagulant was not antigenic. No precipitating immunological reaction occurred between rabbit sera and tsetse hindguts or midguts. Titers of sera from rabbits receiving a 2nd exposure to tsetses following a period of no exposure followed an anamnestic response.
