Structure-Activity Relationships of Cinnamic Acid Derivatives as Germination Inhibitor of the FernGleichenia Japonica

Abstract
Methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (1) showing an inhibitory activity for lettuce seed germination was isolated from the root-stalks of Gleichenia japonica. From the study on structure-activity relationship of 21 related compounds of 1, an o-hydroxyl or m-methoxyl group of the aromatic ring was found to be necessary for the strong inhibitory activity.
