Carbonyls from Semicarbazones. Separation by Gas Chromatography

Abstract
A simple rapid method for collection of volatile carbonyl compounds consists of separation of the liquid and solid semicarbazones formed in a mixture, addition of phosphoric acid to regenerate the carbonyl compounds, and subsequent determination of the latter by gas chromatography. The method separates a wide variety of aliphatic, aromatic, saturated, and unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Crotonaldehyde and 2,4-pentanedione, however, are not regenerated.
