Abstract
The urinary 17-ketosteroids (17-KS) were separated by means of a simplified column chromatography in 29 cases of male hypogonadism, 11 patients with diseases of the hypophysis, 21 hirsute women and 3 cases of liver cirrhosis. These preliminary studies indicated that the analysis gives a better indication of the hormonal function of the testes than total 17-KS estimations, and allows, to a certain extent, an evaluation of the testicular as well as the adrenal cortical androgen production independent of each other; demonstrates qualitative changes in the 17-KS in hypopituitarism which may be of differential-diagnostic interest in certain disorders; offers new possibilities for a classification of virilizing disease in women; and permits an estimation of the adrenal cortical function during the administration of cortisone.
